I'm twenty years old, and in a band called Chain Letter which we've been playing
together almost three years, still starting in a way. It's hard to believe we got a show in New York, New York at a club on
East 137th street. There were four of us in the band, Anna our bassist and singer, Jack our rhythm guitarist, Kim our drummer,
and me on guitar. |
After that show at East 137th, we went back to a Holiday Inn we were staying at, and had party in a sort of party
room in the hotel. It was just the band and about five or six friends - we were all just hanging out, playing music like My
Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy and eating pizza, things of that sort. |
"Hey, Jennie, go get some more ice for our room... We're all out!" said Jack, laying on a red sofa, not really doing
much. |
I slapped him, and yelled, "Why don't you?! I don't see you doing anything important!" he then grabbed my arm and
twisted it almost all the way around, "OW! Fine, I'll get it!" |
As I went out of our fairly large party suite, I walked all the way down the hall to the ice machine. I filled a barrel
with it, and then started walking back. I then tripped over one of the cleaners brooms laying astride in the hall, and I accidentally
dumped some of the ice over some man in front of me. |
"Hey!" the man said, "Watch where you're going sometime!" |
"Sorry," I mumbled, picking the ice up that landed on the floor, and the man came down to help me. |
"Let me help, ok," and I immediately recognized who this man was. |
"Oh my God," I gasped, "You're Tre Cool! Damn, I love Green Day! Sorry about bumping into you." |
"No problem!" he smiled, and picked the last of the ice and put it into the barrel, "I do that all the time!" |
As I dumped that dirty ice into a nearby garbage can, I asked him, "Why is Green Day here? I didn't know they were
still on tour!" |
"We're not!" he said, "We just have a small show coming up tomorrow. Why are you here?" |
"My band had a show today," I said as he walked me back down the hall to my room. |
"You guys any good?" he asked, curious. |
"Well, Chain Letter's sort of new," I said, looking at him, "We've been playing for three years around and only have
one album, no major label or anything. There are four of us, and I play guitar." |
He nodded and said, "Ok. That's all I need to know," he stopped me suddenly, and said, "You guys are going to do an
opening act for us tomorrow!" |
I was confused, "WHAT?!" |
"You heard me," he said, as we stood right outside my bands door. |
"Uh ... I don't think Chain Letter is USED to the sort of crowds Green Day gets!" I said to him, sort of scared. |
"That's ok, though," he said, "It's only going to be a small show, and you can call us if you guys change your mind.
Here -" he gave me a paper that said when and where the concert was, and then wrote their room number on that paper, "- that's
our room number. We'd love to have you guys do an opening act. Seriously, we don't have one, and could use one. There's a
party afterwards if you'd like - PLEASE SAY YES!" |
This made me feel better and I said, "Ok, I'll talk to the band about it. Bye, see you tomorrow I hope." |
"Ok, bye!" he said, and started to head the direction we came from, but then turned around and asked, "What's your
name again?!" |
"I didn't say!" I called to him, about half way down the hall from me, "My name's Jennie though and the band is Chain
Letter!" |
"Oh, bye Jennie!" he said, and was gone. |
I wondered how my band would react when I told them we'd be doing a show with Green Day. I came in and Jack ran up
to me with an angry look on his face. |
"You took a while!" he said, then saw I didn't have ice, "and you didn't even get ice! That's mean!" |
I sighed, "Yes, but I have a good explanation. You guys may be shocked to hear this, but Green Day's offered us -
well, Tre Cool offered us an opening act at some show they're having tomorrow." I pulled out the paper, and everyone was silent,
in shock at what I was saying. |
